Just a little suggestion
I think that the forum is well set generally, but it needs something like a small-talk and chatter sub forum. Because, you know, I understand that the main topic here is medicine, but the small talk threads help members know each other. Either by discussing what they ate today, or a forum game - things that really look like nonsense to some - people get to stay a little more time on the forum and *need* to look at more threads and topic to discuss.
That's what I think the forum needs.

Another thing about the forum is the ability to use an avatar, which I think will be really convenient. When the forum starts to grow, the users will need a little more creativity to show up to distinguish from each other. An avatar would be quite helpful (instead of always having to view one's profile).

Oh, and any suggestions if there should be an "introduce yourself" thread? Just somewhere where new members write a few lines about themselves and you know, the elder members say "Hi, I like books, too" (for example).

I think there need to be some more engaging and interacting activities for the members. Even there may be something like a wall where the member can express his / her moods and emotions and also the experiences related to health, profession etc. and also with the option for other members to comment. This will not only help improve the mutual interaction but will also enhance information sharing which is the basic purpose of the forum.
