Learning to dance - in classes or private

Are you a good dancer? Where did you learn, and more importantly how?
Did you attend classes, did you learn home in private? Or maybe with some friends..
Do you think that dancing classes are unneeded, that if someone wants to learn, they can do it alone?
Discuss here the advantages and drawbacks of the ways of learning how to dance.

I am not a good dancer but i would love to be the one. And for that if i could ever spare some time i would join some dance academy and get properly trained. Why? Obviously one should know the art if you want to learn it.
